An in depth look at one fascinating aspect of logo creation.
Logo
design is an art unto itself. Many people think that designing a logo
is all about creativity and proficiency in a design program.
Surprisingly it takes a bit more than an artist's eye to create a truly
premium logo.
Experienced designers know the importance of
choosing the correct font to accompany the artwork they are creating for
the client. So what does it take to be able to determine when the font
is "right" or not? It takes experience and a keen eye. Logo designers do
this type of work every day. They see the most chosen fonts for any
given industry and will be able to tell you what the more popular fonts
are associated with in the minds of most people.
Often the client
will not view fonts this way, they more likely scroll through the font
choices until one strikes an appropriate emotional chord. The only
problem with this is that most people do not recognize that the reason
they feel certain way has to do with an association that is being made.
They have seen this font somewhere before, probably hundreds of times,
and they have created a brain space for what that font makes them "feel"
like. There are fonts that remind people of eating healthy and health
foods like "Tempus Sans ITC". The font "chiller" is a common internet
logo font and often reminds people of Halloween, horror and bad metal
bands, while "Curlz MT" often makes people think wiccan, head shop, and
humorous novelty shops.
Many clients love the font "comic sans".
This is a very common font and is used widely across the web. It's great
for creating familiarity but it lacks originality and has been slightly
overused. A good designer will take your appreciation of this font and
translate it to a better business logo by selecting a more current
choice with a similar feeling so you can stand out from the pack.
It
is also a good idea to update all company logos to more contemporary
imaginings. Sometimes looking through a more established company's
history can yield surprising finds on just how much their logo has
changed, or not, over the years. This is most evident in the world of
programming. Every time a new version of the software is released the
logo and often the font is updated to match the most current trend in
creative logo design. However you slice it, font choice is important and
more in depth than most people give it credit for.
